A one-time investment is known as a lumpsum investment. To help you estimate the future value of such an investment, the mutual fund calculator uses the following formula:
M = P × (1 + R)ⁿ
Where:
Let’s take an example. Suppose you invest ₹5,00,000 as a one-time lumpsum for 10 years at an expected annual return of 12%.
Using the formula:
M = P×(1+R)n
M = 5,00,000×(1+0.12)10
M = 5,00,000×3.1058
M ≈ ₹15.53lakh
So, your ₹5 lakh investment grows to about ₹15.53 lakh in 10 years
The formula used to calculate mutual fund returns for sip investments is given below:
A = P × (([1 + r]^n – 1) / r) × (1 + r)
Where:
Now, let’s look at SIP. Imagine you invest ₹10,000 every month for 10 years at an expected annual return of 12%.
Using the formula:
A = P × (([1 + r]^n – 1) / r) × (1 + r)
(1+r)n=(1+0.01)120 ≈ 3.3004
Subtract 1: 3.3004−1 = 2.3004
Divide by r: 2.3004 ÷ 0.01 = 230.04
Multiply by P and (1+r): 10,000 × 230.04 × 1.01 ≈ ₹23,23,400
Result
In simple terms: By investing ₹10,000 every month for 10 years at 12% annual return, your money nearly doubles, growing to ₹23.23 lakh.
The illustration below shows how a monthly SIP of ₹5,000, with an expected annual return of 12% (compounded monthly), can grow over different investment durations.
