What is AIF?

Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) are investment vehicles that offer unique strategies beyond traditional stocks, bonds, or cash.

These specialised funds cater to investors seeking diversification and the potential for higher returns, though they also carry elevated risk.

Categories and Objectives

Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) are classified into three major categories based on their investment strategies and regulatory guidelines.

  • Category I AIFs: These funds focus on start-ups, early-stage ventures, social projects, and other sectors deemed socially or economically beneficial. They often receive government incentives and support.
  • Category II AIFs:This category encompasses a diverse range of instruments, including private equity and debt funds, without relying on borrowing for daily operations.
  • Category III AIFs:Funds in this category employ complex trading strategies, such as leveraging and hedging, to generate short-term returns. Hedge funds and PIPE (private investment in public equity) funds fall under this classification.
Types of AIFs

AIFs offer investors a wide range of specialised investment options. This includes:

  • Venture Capital Funds (VCFs) and Angel Funds invest in high-growth start-ups and early-stage companies, often with government incentives.
  • Private Investment in Public Equity (PIPE) Funds purchase public company shares at a discount through private placement.
  • Social Venture Funds prioritise positive social and environmental impact alongside financial returns.
  • Private Equity Funds and Debt Funds provide capital to private or unlisted companies \and governments, respectively.
  • Infrastructure Funds focus on long-term, stable income from projects like roads, bridges, and power plants.
  • Fund of Funds offers diversified portfolios by investing across various AIF categories.
